A TRANSPLANTS GUIDE TO PRO SPORTS IN SEATTLE

There is one question that comes to mind now that you have moved to the Seattle area.

What exactly is a Seahawk?

You made the smooth transition across the state or country to your new home. You hired the best long-distance movers in Auburn WA.

But one thing got left behind — your favorite sports team.

You might know everything about the teams you cheered for and still will. But going to a live game in the Seattle area will now take a bit of getting to know the teams and areas.

The one thing to know about sports in Seattle is this city puts the FANATIC in fan when it comes to the NFL. There are pictures and paraphernalia everywhere you go. The residents here live and breathe football.

Want to make a new friend? Ask anyone how they think the team will do this year after trading All-Pro quarterback Russell Wilson, who also is a Super Bowl champion. That will surely make you a local quickly.

Don’t fret that your team is not on this coast, just follow this guide to the sports in the Seattle area and you will soon know what it’s like to be the 12th member of the team.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

When you walk around the Seattle area, you may see jerseys with a favorite player. But many will be wearing the No. 12. But there really is no one with that number. That person is you.

The Seattle Seahawks have one great tradition called the 12th Man, where the goal is to be part of the team and not only support them, but when at a game, be the loudest stadium in the NFL.

But you might be a little late this year for the heyday of this team that was in two Super Bowls in the last decade. This offseason they traded their top player in quarterback Russell Wilson who is now in Denver. But coach Pete Carroll insists the team is not in a rebuild. This year they are in line to start former Bronco Drew Lock at quarterback. Which means they will NOT BE A LOCK, for a winning season.

And if you are wondering, a Seahawk is an Osprey.

THINGS TO TALK ABOUT WITH LOCALS: The team is rebuilding their offensive and defensive lines that were once great and led them to the Super Bowls. They also resigned safety Quandre Diggs to secure the defense.

What to know here when talking with locals about the Seahawks is that they play in perhaps the toughest division in football that includes San Francisco, Arizona and the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

SEATTLE MARINERS

The good news is that it’s summer and time for Major League Baseball.

The Seattle Mariners play at T-Mobile Park, which is right next to Lumen Field where the Seahawks play. And both are located on the water along I-5.

The team is playing well this year and almost made the playoffs last season.

Now the not-so-good news:

This team has not made the playoffs since 2001.

But they are building.

While they once had players like Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez, also known as A-Rod who once almost married J Lo, the team has some new talent. Robbie Ray is a name you will hear as the team’s top pitcher. Ty France at first base also is the team’s top hitter right now.

While the team is seven games behind in the standings, know that it’s early in the season. They might not catch the Angels or Astros, but this is summer. Go have a hot dog or a plant-based burger and enjoy sports in Seattle during the best time of year in this city.

THE STADIUMS

Both the Seahawks and Mariners stadiums are 30 minutes along I-5 from Auburn.

NBA AND NHL

The Seattle Super Sonics moved from Seattle years ago to Oklahoma City. Now Seattle has been trying to get a team back for years, with little luck.

The Seattle Kraken have completed the team’s first year in the NHL. While they had a losing record, the team is building. They play at Climate Pledge Arena on the north side of the city where the WNBA team the Seattle Storm play.

Women’s Sports in Seattle

The most winning team in the Auburn and Seattle area are the ladies of the WNBA team the Seattle Storm. They have won four championships, the last in 2020.

The Storm has the best player in the league in Breanna Stewart who fans call Stewie.

The new season has just started and the Storm will look to compete again for another title this year.

SEATTLE SOUNDERS

There are so many successful teams to watch in the Auburn and Seattle area, including the MLS team, the Seattle Sounders, that won the Cup twice since 2016.

The team plays at Lumen Field where the Seahawks play.

COLLEGE SPORTS

The team in the Auburn and Seattle area are the Washington Huskies in the Pac-12. While this team has not been tops in football for a while the men’s basketball Huskies won the Pac-12 regular season in 2019.
